Yes - after some 27 years Journey at last perform again in the UK with three shows starting with the Edinburgh Playhouse. The Playhouse has a 2000 capacity and was sold out shortly after the tickets went on sale! What a return to the UK as well, prior to the show Journey fans from all over the UK and a few from other countries as well congregated in and outside nearby bars. Fans meeting that had only know each other through places like the Journey Backtalk forum - exchanging memories and favorite songs, and trying to guess which of the many Journey songs would be sung at the show. As the doors of the Edinburgh Playhouse opened an excited crowd quickly filled the venue. At 8PM prompt Journey took to the stage - the crowd leaped to their feet and let out a loud cheer as Journey burst into sound with their first song - " Separate Ways". The band seemed quite surprised at the excitement of the crowd, I don't think they had expected such a response! Nine of the songs were from the 1981 Escape album with just 2 songs from their latest "Generations" album - "Faith In The Heartland" and "Out of Harms Way". The Show was "rock" orientated and the crowd lapped it up with hands clapping, jumping up and down, and generally getting right into the music. For some of the fans this was their first ever Journey live concert, and I'm sure we all look forward to more Uk dates in the future. 27 years ago the band couldn't raise an interest from British promoters - you can bet they are falling over each other to book Journey now! All in all a fabulous show with the kind of performance you would expect from a seasoned band that are well used to performing with each other. Jonathan Cain played a blues jam on the harmonica showing just another of his many talents apart from guitar, keyboard, and also sang "Just the Same Way". Ross Valory played base, joking with the crowd and pulling faces - you could see he was please with the crowd’s reaction to the band. His base guitar playing a solid rhythm for the band. Neal Schon - what a man on the guitar, played a couple of verses of " Loch Lomond" and "Amazing Grace" much to the joy of the crowd. The big surprise was Deen Castronovo who proved he is as equally adept at singing as he is at home on the drums. Deen sung 3 songs - "Where Were You", "Still They Ride", and also the very popular "Mother Father" - what a fantastic voice Deen has. Steve Augeri - what a showman - leaping all over the stage, perfect in voice and singing to the audience making them feel a real part of the show. The band left the stage and the crowd roared and stamped and clapped for more chanting "Journey", "journey", "Journey" and the band obliged with a fast paced and well performed encore. The song list for the show was :- Separate Ways, Ask The Lonely, Only The Young, Faith In The Heartland, Neal Schon Guitar Solo, Stone In Love, Wheel In The Sky, Where Were You, Lights, Still They Ride, Just The Same Way, Chain Reaction, Dead Or Alive, Edge Of The Blade, Who's Cryin’ Now, Mother Father, Open Arms, Escape, Out Of Harms Way, Faithfully, Don’t Stop Believin’, Any Way You Want It, Be Good To Yourself. Encores:- Keep On Runnin’, Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’All in all a fine night to remember and one for the history books for all Journey fans, lets hope for many more UK tours in the future from Journey. |
